Worked with bulky weight yarn, this snuggly bulky hat will crochet up in just an evening or two. With four hat sizes ranging from toddler to adult extra large, there should be a size for almost all of your family members. Just be sure to wrangle them up and measure their heads.

But Which Side is “Correct?”

Why do we have to choose? Many times labeling one side of a piece of crochet “wrong side” feels … well … wrong. In my experience, both sides of some crochet stitches looks equally awesome. The variety of texture from front to back can be fascinating to watch as the piece works up and your eye follows the strand of yarn. This visual design appreciation leads me to prefer the back side or “wrong side” sometimes.

And with my This Way, That Way hat, both side are visually intriguing. I often gift these hats with either side facing out – it’s like a 2-for-1 pattern. My Inside Out Tube Cowl is another example where both sides look awesome as a cowl/scarf.

I also use a Crochet Snowball as a motif or applique for this bulky hat for the toddler and child sizes. These little snowballs — in place of buttons — really dress up a hat. They also make the cutest Christmas tree ornaments. Check out more info about the Crochet Snowball pattern.

The free pattern is provided below including the sizes, materials, and notes. An ad-free PDF version of the This Way, That Way bulky hat is also available for you to purchase, download, and print out.

Directions for the This Way, That Way Bulky Hat

Chain 15 [18, 22, 25]

Round 1:

Stitch 2 single crochet in second chain from hook, singe crochet in one loop of each foundation chain until last chain in row, stitch 4 single crochet in last chain, continue to turn foundation chain in your hand and single crochet in each second loop of foundation chain until last chain in row, stitch 2 single crochet in last chain in row, slip stitch in first single crochet to join round, 32 [38, 46, 52] single crochet total. (This will create an elongated oval which will be the top of the hat.)

Start a peak hat with an elongated crochet oval.

Rounds 2 – 23 [26, 30, 34]:

Single crochet in back loop of first stitch from previous row, continue single crochet in back loop of each stitch, working in a spiral to reach indicated row count.

Round 24 [27, 31, 35]:

Slip stitch in each stitch of final round.

Fasten off.

Finishing:

Turn hat inside out – wrong side (as artist’s choice.) Fold both top ends of hat together – see first example photo below. Without leaving space between points, sew ends together at points – see second example photo below. The last example photo below shows the hat finished.

How to seam a peak hat -- fold in sides and sew together. Then turn right side out.

Fasten off.

Weave in ends.

Turn hat to preferred side.

Attach any number of Crochet Snowballs as artist’s choice.

Crochet snowballs are a fun, decorative touch for the bulky This Way, That Way crochet hat pattern.
