My favorite feature about this crochet headband pattern design is how beautifully the beans / puff stitches line up in rows. In some of my patterns, like the Spring Charms Baby Blanket, the beans are offset in rows and make a braided or plait design. These are gorgeous and I love making them.

But in this headband or ear warmer pattern, I stack the bean stitches on top of slip stitches to get them to line up perfectly straight in rows. Due to this construction, there is less elasticity in the headband so make sure to check the size chart below before you begin.

As you may know, I live in Vermont and one of my goals for my crochet winter accessory designs is warmth — for my family. So I packed these beans full of yarn. This makes a really cozy fabric to keep all those little ears you are responsible for nice and toasty. The pattern is available is sizes toddler to adult. These will make the perfect stocking stuffers and quick holiday gifts for the whole family. And, it looks great paired with the free Gathered Buds Cowl or the Gathered Buds Scarf.

One more note, this ear warmer is worked flat and then seamed. But don’t worry, I give you picture instructions to create a seam that is practically invisible. Have fun making this great little ear warmer!

There are five Gathered Buds patterns and each one will be available on Crochet.Life. Check out the Gathered Buds Hat and Gathered Buds Cowl. Now you can add the Gathered Buds Headband pattern to your collection!

The free pattern is provided below including the sizes, materials, and notes. An ad-free PDF version of the Gathered Buds Crochet Headband Pattern is also available for you to purchase, download, and print out.

Pattern Notes

Due to the nature of the bean stitch, this design does not have the same elasticity as my other ear warmer designs. Please be sure to check head measurements before beginning your piece.

Directions for nearly “invisible” seam located at end of pattern. Seaming instructions are similar to the Mattress Seam.

Only use light blocking if shaping is desired.

The yarn used for these items contains natural fiber and requires special laundering. Please read yarn labels and follow directions to maintain the life of your crochet work.

Chain 1, slip stitch in each stitch of row, turn.

Rows 12 and 13 [14 and 15, 16 and 17, 18 and 19]:

Chain 1, slip stitch in front loop of each stitch.

Fasten off.

Finishing:

Use tapestry needle to seam piece (See following section for picture tutorial of seaming instruction). These instructions are similar to the Mattress Stitch Join.

With right side facing out, match ends of piece. Begin at bottom of seam, (right or left side) insert needle in to outside loop.

Bring needle across center and sew through same stitch on opposite side.

Pull yarn through both stitches to set seam. Continue to pull yarn to set the seam after each pair or side to side match.

Moving upward, join outside stitch from one side to other.

When working with slip stitch row, match to the slip stitch under the bean stitch. See Seaming Image 1 and 2.

When working to join bean stitch rows, find loop on the interior of bean stitch to connect the seam. See Seaming Image 3 and 4.

Fasten off when you reach the top.

Weave in loose ends.

Do you have a video for the beginning row for this? I do not understand the instructions?
