Warm and Bulky Crochet Cowl Free Pattern

This Crocheted Cowl pattern is designed for when you need something really warm around your neck. It is made with half double crochet and bean / puff crochet stitches (by nature thick stitches) combined with bulky weight yarn to create a really cozy fabric.

This cowl is worked in the round, with no seaming. As you are snuggled up on a cool fall night, day dreaming of brisk adventures exploring winter wonderlands, this project is perfect for a quick make without a lot of complicated directions. Just rounds of simple stitches with bulky weight yarn. When you’re done, you’ll have a beautiful cowl to snuggle in or a perfect gift for someone special over the holidays.

What You Need to Make This Super Cozy Crochet Cowl Pattern

Warm and Bulky Crochet Cowl Free Pattern

Size Assembled:

14 in. tall x 28 in. circumference (35.5 x 71 cm)

Materials:

Approximately 350 yards bulky weight yarn. Drops Andes wool/alpaca mix yarn used for cowls pictured, but any bulky weight yarn can be used.

Crochet hook: Size L/11 (8.0 mm)

Tapestry needle

Gauge:

In half double crochet, 5 stitches and 3 rows = 2 inches.

Skill Level: Easy

Pattern Notes

Pattern is one size only.

Cowl is reversible.

Please take time to create a gauge sample before beginning work.

Cowl is worked in a continuous spiral. Do not join rounds unless specified.

If necessary, light blocking only.

The yarn used for these items contains natural fiber and requires special laundering. Please read yarn labels and follow directions to maintain the life of your crochet work.

Special Stitches

Half double crochet in bottom loop (Back Bar) of foundation chain:

Turn your foundation chain upside down and crochet in the row of single “bumps” or loops created on the bottom when you made the chain.

Altered Bean Stitch (Bean Stitch) / Puff Stitch:

Insert hook in stitch, yarn over and pull through, *yarn over, insert hook in same stitch, pull through, repeat from * 1 more time, yarn over, pull through 6 loops on hook, chain 1 (to lock stitch). Skip 1 stitch immediately following bean stitch. This will equal two stitches in pattern.

How to Make a Crochet Cowl

Chain 66, join round with slip stitch to first chain, do to not twist chain.

Easy to Crochet Womens Cowl Pattern

Round 1:

Turn foundation chain over and half double crochet in bottom loop of first stitch of foundation chain (see Special Stitches Section for instructions), do not twist piece, continue to half double crochet in each stitch of foundation chain, 66 stitches total.

Rounds 2 – 6:

Half double crochet in each stitch of previous round for number of rounds indicated.

Round 7:

Slip stitch in each stitch of previous round.

Round 8:

Altered Bean Stitch / Puff Stitch (see Special Stitches Section for instructions) in first stitch of previous round, continue with bean stitch for entire round, 33 bean stitches total.

Rounds 9 – 16:

Altered bean stitch in each stitch of previous round for number of rounds indicated.

Round 17:

Slip stitch in each stitch of previous round.

Rounds 18 – 23:

Half double crochet in each stitch of previous round for number of rounds indicated.

Round 24:

Slip stitch in each stitch of previous round.

Round 25:

Altered bean stitch in each stitch of previous round.

Round 26:

Slip stitch in each stitch of previous round.

Fasten off.

Finishing:

Turn cowl over and work on foundation chain.

Round 1:

Begin at first stitch foundation chain, slip stitch in each stitch of base round.

Round 2:

Altered bean stitch in each stitch of previous round.

Round 3:

Slip stitch in each stitch of previous round.

Weave in ends.
