One of my most absolutely favorite things to make is a baby blanket. And this crochet blanket pattern makes the most beautiful Lake Shore Trellis blanket perfect for a newborn or toddler.

Crochet Blanket Pattern – Lake Shore Trellis Blanket
Crocheting a baby blanket is an excellent idea for anyone who loves to crochet. Making a new born’s first gift can be both fun and exciting. With the right instructions, you will have a beautiful handmade blanket in no time at all!
How Do You Crochet a Baby Blanket for Beginners?
First of all, choose your favorite colors that will go well with the nursery décor or room theme color scheme. You may want to make it gender neutral if you are unsure whether the parents plan on having more children in the future – or if the baby has yet to make their appearance.
If there is already a sibling in place, think about their coloring when choosing yarn colors too! You can never really match colors perfectly, nor do you want a mix-up of who’s blanket is who’s later on (trust me, kiddos love handmade blankets – they’re special!).
Then it’s a matter of selecting a pattern that fits your skill level.
This particular pattern is written as an easy/intermediate level. So if this is your first crochet project, you might want to tackle something a little simpler. If you’re looking for a super simple baby blanket crochet pattern, check out these:
Which Crochet Stitch is Best for a Baby Blanket?
There is no best stitch for a baby blanket. The pattern you use will dictate the stitches necessary to make the pattern you’re looking to follow. I personally like to use tight stitching for baby blankets so that little toes and fingers don’t have a tendency to work their way through the stitches and get caught. But again, this can be accomplished with a vast number of stitches.
How Many Crochet Stitches are in a Baby Blanket?
That will always depend on the pattern. You can plan on starting with a chain of anywhere between 90-100 stitches to start if you’re using an aran or worsted weight yarn. But if you’re using a bulky yarn, that number will be substantially less as the yarn will work up much thicker.
So, trust the pattern, get the corresponding size yarn to make the gauge work and you’ll be set.
What Size Should a Baby Blanket Be?
I typically like my baby blankets to be about 40-inches by 30-inches, or thereabouts. There is not a hard-and-fast number, but what you don’t want is a blanket that’s far too large for the baby or their crib. That’s the biggest concern.
