Summer is a wonderful time to make a crochet bag!
Bags and crochet totes are the perfect projects to work on as you enjoy bright sunshine and warming breezes.
My new bag design is worked flat and then joined with a single crochet stitch seam. This easy crochet pattern is filled with fun puff stitches to match with a beautiful blue sky, puffy white clouds and poolside relaxing.

Size:
Approximately 15 in wide x 13.5 in tall (38 cm x 34 cm)
Materials:

Approximately 320 yards worsted weight yarn. LB Collection Pure Wool Yarn used for bag pictured.

2 – 23 inch (59 cm) leather bag handles

Crochet hook size I/9 (5.5 mm) or size needed to obtain gauge

Tapestry needle

Quilting thread to attach bag handles
Skill Level: Easy
Gauge: In half double crochet, 15 stitches and 10 rows = 4 in (10 cm)
Pattern Notes for the Aluren Crochet Bag
The yarn used for these designs contains natural fiber and requires special laundering. Please read yarn labels and follow directions to maintain the life of your crochet work.
Special Stitches
Half Double Crochet in Bottom Loop of Foundation Chain:
Turn your foundation chain over and crochet in the row of single “bumps” or loops created on the bottom when you made the chain.
(Altered) Bean Stitch with 6 Loops on Hook / Puff Stitch:
Insert hook in stitch, yarn over and pull through, *yarn over, insert hook in same stitch, yarn over and pull through, repeat from * 1 more times, yarn over, pull through 6 loops on hook, chain 1 (to lock stitch). Skip 1 stitch immediately following bean stitch. This will equal 2 stitches in pattern.
(Altered) Bean Stitch with 8 Loops on Hook / Puff Stitch:
Insert hook in stitch, yarn over and pull through, *yarn over, insert hook in same stitch, yarn over and pull through, repeat from * 2 more times, yarn over, pull through 8 loops on hook, chain 1 (to lock stitch). Skip 1 stitch immediately following bean stitch. This will equal 2 stitches in pattern.
Single Crochet Stitch Seam:
Place the crochet pieces together and match rows. Insert the hook through both pieces, double check to match rows, and pull up a loop, finish stitch as a single crochet. Continue working a row of single crochet to create the seam.
Directions for the Aluren Crochet Bag
Chain 57.
Row 1:
Half double crochet in bottom loop of foundation chain (see Special Stitches Section for instructions) in second chain from hook and continue to end of row, turn. (56 stitches total)
Rows 2 – 70:
Chain 1, half double crochet in first 8 stitches of row, 4 (Altered) Bean Stitches [6 Loops] (see Special Stitches Section above), 8 half double crochet, 4 bean stitches, 8 half double crochet, 4 bean stitches, 8 half double crochet in last 8 stitches of row, turn. (12 beans total, 32 half double crochet stitches total)
Row 71:
Chain 1, half double crochet in each stitch of row. (56 stitches total)
Do not fasten off.
Bag Assembly:
Fold bag in half and match both rows of half double crochet at top of bag.
Single Crochet Seam (see Special Stitches Section) along side seam of bag from top to base.
Fasten off and repeat on other side.
Fasten off.
Do not turn bag to right side. (Altered) Bean Stitch with 8 Loops (see Special Stitches Section above), beginning at side seam around top of bag, slip stitch in first stitch of round to join. (56 beans total)
Turn bag to right side.
Weave in ends.
Attach Crochet Bag Straps:
Set the ends of the handle on the bag. Straps in photo are evenly placed in half double crochet columns on either side of center bean stitch column. (This placement may change if you use longer or shorter straps.)
If using clips or pins, place pins to hold base of straps in position. Use quilting thread to sew the straps to the bag. Place needle between stitches, not into yarn strand, when sewing.
Position the straps on the second side to match the first. Pin in place and sew.
