Cowls are one of my favorite things to wear in cold weather.  They are like a scarf, but I don’t have to worry about the ends dangling, getting caught, or in my case, getting dirty while outside in the garden. The chrysalis is a stunning crochet cowl pattern that combines a nice thick bulky yarn and a combination of half double crochet and double treble crochet stitches.

The Chrysalis Chunky Crochet Cowl Pattern

I chose this pattern to make a nice thick cowl perfect for cold weather.  This stitch and pattern works best for a bulkier yarn, but isn’t impossible to make with a lighter weight yarn.  It is also a simple enough pattern that you could make it as a beginner.  Another bonus that this offers is that it can be unisex.  While most men don’t wear cowls regularly, this one is just neutral enough it would work well for anyone.

How Wide Should a Crochet Cowl Be?

This is a very personal thing in my opinion.  Cowls can fit snuggly around the neck like this one, or be longer and a bit more similar to the infinity scarf style.  For some, an 8″-12″ wide pattern would cover the neck and upper chest nicely.  If making for a child, a 4″-6″ wide cowl might be more than plenty of width.

This particular cowl is approximately 13″x13″ in height and width or 33×33 cm.

How Much Yarn Do I Need to Crochet a Cowl?

This pattern uses approximately 350 yards of a bulky weight yarn.  The amount of yarn needed will depend upon the yarn itself, the size you are making, and any extra accent motifs added to the edging of they cowl.
