What You Need to Make this Free Crochet Ribbed Baby Blanket Pattern

Size:

Approximately 40 x 31 in (102 x 79 cm)
Pattern is worked in multiples of 12 + 8.
The pattern is worked over 2 rows.

Materials:

Approximately 1,200 yards heavy worsted or aran weight yarn. Drops Nepal wool and alpaca blend used for blanket pictured, but any soft worsted weight yarn is perfect for this crochet baby blanket as long as you can make a gauge swatch to match.

Crochet hook: Size J/10 (6 mm) or size needed to obtain gauge

In alternating half double crochet and double crochet post stitches,13 stitches and 10 rows = 4 inches

Ribbed Crochet Blanket Special Stitches

Half Double Crochet in Back Bar (Bottom Loop) of Foundation Chain:

Turn your foundation chain over and crochet in the row of single “bumps” or loops created on the bottom when you made the chain.

Front Post double crochet:

Yarn over, insert hook right to left behind the double crochet post from row below, yarn over and finish stitch as a double crochet.

Back Post double crochet:

Yarn over, insert hook right to left in front of the double crochet post from row below, yarn over and finish stitch as a double crochet, no slip stitch.

How to Make this Crochet Ribbed Baby Blanket

Chain 92.

Row 1:

Turn foundation chain over and half double crochet in bottom loop of third stitch of foundation chain (see Special Stitches Section for instructions), continue half double crochet stitch in each bottom loop of foundation chain, turn. (90 stitches total and for each row hereafter.)

Rows 2 – 12:

Chain 2, half double crochet in each stitch of row, turn.

Row 13:

*Chain 2, standard half double crochet in first six stitches of row, front post double crochet in next six stitches, continue to alternate six half double crochet stitches with six front post double crochet across row (ending the pattern with standard half double crochets), turn.

Row 14:

Chain 2, standard half double crochet in first six stitches of row, back post double crochet in next six stitches, continue to alternate six half double crochet stitches with six back post double crochet across row (ending the pattern with standard half double crochets), turn.

Rows 15 – 86:

Repeat from * for indicated number of rows, turn.

Row 87 – 98:

Chain 2, half double crochet in each stitch of row.

Fasten off.

Finishing:

Weave in ends.
