I have a grand plan to make a few fun things from granny squares, so I came up with this light and easy granny square free crochet pattern to be the base for a few fun creations this year.

Light and Easy Granny Square Free Crochet Pattern
I wanted to make a fun market bag, maybe a shrug or a light throw using granny squares. But to do that, I needed a granny square that was light and airy. Plus, I wanted something simple that could be replicated by a beginner crocheter.
The granny square I came up with is so simple but pretty, I can’t wait to get to work on the finished piece. And it’s so quick to work up, you could have a market bag made in an afternoon. So, pick out your yarn, grab your hook and let’s get going!
What Yarn Should You Use for a Granny Square?
For this beginner granny square, I wanted to use a yarn I had available to me that was inexpensive and readily available at local craft stores so it would be easy for you to try out without investing a lot of capital. After looking through the yarn I had on hand, I selected Red Heart Super Saver yarn in a couple of colorways. But this project can be worked with any worsted weight yarn or similar.
What Size Is This Granny Square?
As written, this pattern is one-size. The resulting granny square is 5.5-inches square. This seems really small on the screen, but it is a standard size for granny squares and is a lot larger in person than it seems.
How Much Yarn Will I Need to Make Granny Squares?
I used about 1/8 of each color of 7oz skeins of Red Heart Super Saver 100% acrylic, worsted weight yarn in a Soft Navy and Lemon colorways for the pictured set of granny squares.
I do generally crochet in a medium-tension, so this is what I would consider an average amount of yarn usage for this project.
How Do You Crochet a Granny Square?
This basic granny square crochet pattern is worked in the round, starting with a foundation chain. If you prefer to make a magic circle, you can find instructions to make that, you can see my trinket bowl crochet pattern.
Once you make the foundation chain (or magic circle, if desired), you work the stitches into the circle, working outward toward the edge. Color changes can be made anywhere desired, but I decided to change colors between the “center” and the “border” sections.
What Do You Make with Granny Squares?
Granny squares are the funnest building blocks for a ton of different things. And though it can be a lot of fun to make a set of matching granny squares, you can also mix-and-match, using the same dimensions to make a series of granny squares with different designs. As long as the exterior dimensions are the same, you can still join them into a single larger coordinated piece.

When I do round 3 I keep getting a count of 48, instead of 44. Previous rows all come out right on count… what am I doing wrong?
