I’ve been working more with yarn balls lately so decided I wanted to try a yarn bowl, so I made this easy adjustable yarn bowl crochet pattern to fit any size ball.

Easy and Fast Yarn Bowl Crochet Pattern – Free Crochet Pattern
I have been dealing a lot lately with some older yarns that i got from my mom’s stash and while i am loving the colors and variety, the skeins just weren’t wrapped like they do them now – its disaster-central.
So, I went on a yarn-balling adventure. I balled up all of the older yarn and now I never have to worry about that again.
But, I created a second problem – I have to chase balls around the house. Not with this yarn ball bowl, though. It’s not super heavy, but it creates a space to allow the ball to spin without rolling away.
So, if you’re all about that bowl to hold the balls, grab your hook and let’s get going!
What Yarn Should You Use for a Yarn Bowl?
For this easy yarn bowl, I wanted a yarn that has some weight to it, so it would hold its shape. I had a skein of bulky yarn that was from my mom’s stash that i hadn’t yet balled. So it worked out. This project can be worked with any bulky weight yarn or similar.
What Size Is This Yarn Bowl?
As written, this pattern is one-size. The resulting bowl is 7.5-inches diameter and 3.5-inches deep. However the truly fun thing about this yarn ball holder is that it is adjustable! So no matter how big your ball might be (looking at super bulky yarns now) or tiny your yarn ball might get (play yarn chicken, maybe?) the yarn bowl will continue to help you out.
How Much Yarn Will I Need to Make a Yarn Bowl?
I used about 70 yards of a skein of Lion Brand Scarfie, 78% acrylic, 22% wool, bulky weight yarn (size 5) in Cream/Teal colorway for the pictured yarn bowl.
I do generally crochet in a medium-tension, so this is what I would consider an average amount of yarn usage for this project.
How Do You Crochet a Yarn Bowl?
This easy yarn bowl is worked in the round, starting from the center of the bottom of the bowl. Working into a magic circle, the stitching is fast, building the base of the bowl. When working up the sides, I decided to get fun with the stitches, using a front post double crochet to get a fun texture.
If you are an experienced hooker, you’ll realize that the bottom is kind of wonky with excess stitches. The reason for this is to allow that fun expansion of the bowl around a yarn ball of considerable size.
How Do You Make a Magic Circle?
I chose to use a magic circle to start my trinket bowl. If you would like to avoid using a magic circle, you can simply chain 4 and join with a slip stitch. However, this will not be able to be tightened.
if you would rather make a magic circle, but don’t know where to start, here’s how I make mine:
- Place the hank of yarn on your workspace (whether that’s your table, lap, etc.).
- With your left hand open, and the open side facing you, pinch the end of the yarn between your thumb and bottom of your pinky, with the end pointing toward you.
- Loop the yarn’s working side around your fingers twice, crossing the yarn over itself to the left.
- Hold the yarn in place with your thumb along with the end where you’ve got it pinched.
- Turn over your left hand.
- Insert your crochet hook from right to left, under the right yarn and hook onto the left yarn.
- Pull the left yarn through, as though to pull up a loop and rotate the hook toward yourself.
- Gently remove the looped yarn from your hand and your magic circle is complete!
