When you need a last-minute gift, for a friend or co-worker, it’s so fun to have a go-to crochet project that you can whip up in no time at all! This mosaic mug rug is the perfect solution. It’s quick, easy, and oh-so-cute. And the best part is that it’s so easy to customize. You can use any colors you like to create your own unique design.
Or, you can even make a full set in different colors. They make great gifts for teachers, Secret Santa exchanges, or anyone on your list who could use a little extra warmth and cheer this holiday season.
Plus, if you have scrap yarn, this project is perfect because it takes so little yarn – but makes such a fantastically useful piece that you will find yourself using it time and again.
So what are you waiting for? Get hooking!
What Yarn Should You Use for a Mug Rug?
For this easy mug rug, I wanted it to work up quick and be pretty sturdy. But I also acknowledge that it might be the gather-er of little drips and spills, since it will sit on my desk and that’s kind of it’s job. So, I wanted to use a yarn that would hold up really well to being washed and still hold it’s shape well. Additionally, I wanted to play with color, so I found a fun 100% cotton yarn that was inexpensive.
More specifically, I used Sugar ‘n Cream, worsted weight (4), 100% cotton yarn in Black and Beach Glass colorways. But this project can be worked with any worsted weight yarn or similar.
What Size Is This Mug Rug?
As written, this pattern is one-size. The resulting mug coaster is 6-inches long with a 3.5-inch width. This is reasonably sized for a standard-sized mug. As pictured, the mug I have is a standard size and it fits quite nicely, as you can see in the photos.
How Much Yarn Will I Need to Make a Rug Coaster?
I used a very small amount of a skein of 100% cotton worsted weight yarn (size 4) in Black and Beach Glass colorways for the pictured rug coaster. Even were a set of 4 made from one colorway, a full skein would not be required.
I do generally crochet in a medium-tension, so this is what I would consider an average amount of yarn usage for this project.
How Do You Crochet a Mug Coaster?
This easy mug coaster crochet pattern is worked as a rectangle. The color change and resulting “peek-a-boo” pieces are worked in a very basic mosaic technique where stitches of the black yarn are worked over the two rows of teal yarn below. This is the most basic of mosaic crochet techniques I have found and this small project is a great introduction to working over stitches.
