Easy Pocket Shawl Crochet Pattern
I don’t have time to be chilled this winter – I want all my errands to be enjoyed with a cuddly shrug. And I’m tired of worrying about whether or not I have gloves in the car with me – or if i have any on hand when the neighbor stops me on my morning trip to the post box.
No, this fantastic pocket shawl crochet pattern has me covered – with dual, thick pockets, buttons where you need them, and a width that’s just perfect for draping over my shoulders.
Now on to those pesky winter day errands.
What Yarn Should You Use for a Pocket Shawl?
For this particular project, I wanted something soft and flexible to allow the drape of the scarf to flow with me or whatever other outerwear I might be sporting. So, I selected Caron Simply Soft yarn in the Ocean colorway.
But this project can be worked with any worsted weight yarn or similar. Below are some options that work well for making bracelets.
What Size Does This Pocket Scarf Crochet Pattern Fit?
As written, this pattern is sized to fit an average height woman. I am 5-foot 9-inches and this is perfect for me, based on where I placed the pockets. But the model wearing the shawl (not me) is several inches shorter and the pockets would need to be placed differently if this was a piece for her.
How Much Yarn Will I Need to Make a Pocket Shawl?
I used about almost three full 6 oz skeins of 100% acrylic worsted weight yarn (size 4) in solid dark blue colorway. I do generally crochet in a medium-tension, so this is what I would consider an average amount of yarn usage for this project.
How Do You Crochet a Pocket Shawl?
This particular pocket shawl is crocheted as a long rectangle with a pretty edge and added pockets. To help keep the pattern work from being too repetitive, I decided to add in some little separators to create a little variety. But honestly, a long rectangle with the ends flipped up would make a great pocket shawl, too, whatever floats your boat.

ATTACH POCKETS TO SCARF
Put the scarf across your shoulders, and measure where your wrists lie. Mark the spot on one side of the scarf. Lay the scarf down with the right side up, and place the pocket top (the end with the button hole) where you marked your wrist will lie. Using a ruler, place the pocket in the center of the scarf (left to right). Pin the pocket into place on the scarf.
Using a yarn needle, sew along the back side of the pocket, along the edge, and stitch through the scarf. Sew along both sides and along the bottom of the pocket.
Put a straight pin in the scarf, behind the button hole. Use a large-eyed sewing needle, and thread it with yarn. This can be done with ease, if you use a piece of thread, folded in half, and thread it through the needle, folded end first. The open the loop you just threaded through the needle and put a piece of yarn (about 18 inches long) through the loop of thread. Pull the cut ends of the thread, and pull the yarn through the eye of the needle. You can see this on the accompanying video.
Sew on the button. Repeat for the second pocket.
BUTTON ON FRONT OF SCARF
Try on the scarf again, and mark where you want the center of your button to be. Also mark where the button hole should be located.
Attach the yarn to the scarf, about 1/2 -inch above the center of the button (if youโre using a 1-inch button). Sew the button on as described above, for the pocket.
Attach the yarn to the single crochet around the edge of the scarf, chain 8, skip 8 sc, slip stitch to join to the scarf, turn. Chain 2, HDC in each ch (7 HDCs), slip stitch to join to first chain stitch.
Fasten off. Weave in ends.
