What Yarn Should You Use for a Pint Cozy?
For this easy pint sized cozy, I was looking for something fun and colorful for a gift. This Eco Cozy Watercolors yarn is 100% recycled polyester, which is what drew me to this yarn. I love the idea of working with recycled materials. However, I will note that this is a particularly scratchy and stiff yarn and I may not utilize it again unless its for just the right project – certainly not a wearable. But this project can be worked with any super bulky weight yarn or similar.
What Size Is This Ice Cream Cozy?
As written, this pattern is one-size. The resulting cozy is 3.5-inches diameter and 3-inches deep. The yarn I used is stretchy, so this will allow some flexibility with sizing, although most pint ice creams are a very similar size and shape.
How Much Yarn Will I Need to Make a Pint Cozy?
I used about 15 yards of a skein of Loops & Threads Eco Cozy Watercolors in Majestic Wave colorway for the pictured ice cream cozy.
I do generally crochet in a medium-tension, so this is what I would consider an average amount of yarn usage for this project.
How Do You Crochet a Cozy for an Ice Cream Pint?
This easy pint cozy crochet pattern is worked in the round, starting from the center of the bottom. Working into a magic circle, the stitching comes together fast, building the base of the cozy.
Because a pint of ice cream narrows toward the base, you could, particularly working with a smaller weight yarn and smaller hook, work a pint cozy with increases to fit the size change. However, because this particular yarn is stretchy and the stitch is very forgiving, the pattern works-up on the sides as if this was a straight-sided cylinder, but fits the angled sides VERY well.
How Do You Make a Magic Circle?
I chose to use a magic circle to start my trinket bowl. If you would like to avoid using a magic circle, you can simply chain 4 and join with a slip stitch. However, this will not be able to be tightened.
if you would rather make a magic circle, but don’t know where to start, here’s how I make mine:
- Place the ball of yarn onto the workspace (if that’s a table, your lap, etc.).
- Open your left hand facing you, then pinch the end between your thumb and your pinky, with the end toward you.
- Loop the working end of the yarn around your fingers two times, crossing the yarn over itself on the left side. w
- With your thumb, hold the yarn in place with the end you’ve got pinched.
- Turn over your left hand.
- Insert the crochet hook from under the right yarn and hook onto the left yarn.
- Pull the left yarn through, as though to pull up a loop and rotate the hook upward.
- Gently remove the looped yarn from your hand and your magic circle is complete!
