What is Corner to Corner (C2C) Crochet?

For anyone who doesn’t know what corner to corner actually means, it is a unique crochet technique that is simple (once you get the hang of it) and very versatile.

The technique involves creating pieces of crocheted fabric by starting in one corner and progressing diagonally until you reach the opposite corner. This usually means that you will form a large square but you can also create rectangles and other shapes once you get the hang of it.

The large square is made up of lots of little squares formed of joined stitches, and each square creates a single unit. These units act like little buildinding blocks, and as you progress you increase the number of these squares in each diagonal row until you reach your maximum length when you will have formed a triangle.

From this point you begin to decrease the number of squares in each row to draw your pattern back into the far corner and complete the overall shape. Tah-dah! You will now have a beautifully crocheted square blanket or shawl or wall hanging or whatever else you might think of to crochet.

The best thing about the corner to corner technique is that you can create so many amazing and really detailed designs by using different colored yarn on certain squares.

Pictures and patterns will build up before your eyes as you color the squares, almost like a photograph is made up of hundreds of tiny pixels that are differently colored.

Basically, anything that you can draw on graph paper can become a corner to corner design – you just have to make sure that you count your units carefully and use your colored yarn in the right place.

Honestly, once you get the hang of it, corner to corner can be so fun and satisfying. We have put together a list of our favorite corner to corner patterns from Etsy so that you can get some inspiration and then get crocheting!

10 Fantastic Corner to Corner Crochet Patterns

Rainbow Blanket Corner to Corner Crochet Pattern

Small rainbow blanket with diagonal stripes in the colors of the rainbow in the middle of a cream sofa.

The reason we have picked this rainbow blanket as our first pattern is that it makes the corner to corner process really easy to understand. The individual square units are really distinct and the rainbow color blocking of the diagonal stripes demonstrates beautifully how the piece was formed.

The pattern is lovely and simple, yet does introduce multiple colors which will be important as you begin to tackle more complex designs. This pattern has no fancy edging or fringing so it really is a great example of pure corner to corner and will provide you with lots of great crocheting practice as you make it.

What is more, the rainbow design is bright, bold and will liven up any dreary sitting room or bedroom. Plus, it is great to wear out for a pride parade or hang from your window like a pride flag! It will come together really quickly once you find your rhythm and would make the perfect handmade gift for any LGBTQ friend or supporter.

Corner to Corner Throw / Blanket Crochet Pattern

Large corner to corner throw with dark blue, light blue, and white diagonal stripes draped over a brown sofa.

This next corner to corner pattern forms a rectangle rather than a square and therefore involves slightly more concentration when counting your units. For this pattern, why not start a stitch tally or pattern log and mark off each unit as you work?

This is a really handy habit to get into when working on corner to corner patterns as it will help you out if you forget how many units you have completed in each row. The color blocking on this scarf is absolutely beautiful as it fades very gradually from light to dark.

This can be achieved by choosing three or four different shades of the same color yarn and it looks incredibly smooth when you eventually stand back. The dark stripes provide strong accents throughout the design, and as a result this throw would look wonderful when draped over any couch or armchair.

Scrappy Corner to Corner Crochet Blanket Pattern

Oh this pattern just makes for such an amazing blanket. All the color and life – and it’s made from scraps! I just love this fun and beautiful idea.

Herringbone Blanket C2C Crochet Pattern

Herringbone style blanket with white, yellow, pink, blue, and green colors laid in a dark wooden floor.

Of course, corner to corner designs are not restricted to diagonal lines. Once you start to understand the grid-like nature of the patterns then the possibilities are endless. This herringbone design is bold yet minimalist and the four colors work perfectly together.

Because the colours are still placed in blocks this pattern is a great stepping stone towards working on more involved designs – it also happens to look incredibly chic. It would make a wonderful addition to any living room or bedroom, and could even make a lovely rug if backed with some protective lining. T

The pattern requires that you switch color within each diagonal row and therefore it will be a little more time consuming than other blankets, and will most certainly require you to keep track of your progress on a stitch log. But the final product is stunning and will be worth all the effort.

Gingham Check Blanket C2C Crochet Pattern

A small triangle of a purple, pink, and white gingham style crochet blanket with balls of yarn in the same color next to it.

Gingham patterns work really well with the corner to corner technique and this pattern is especially great because it comes with lots of help and guidance. There are step by step instructions that explain the corner to corner process, as well as an in depth photo tutorial with lots of close ups.

You will be able to refer to these photos as you work and compare your progress with them so that you stay on track. This pattern allows you to make a blanket of any size as long as it is square, so it is great for everything from dishcloths to bedspreads! Plus, who doesn’t love gingham? It is quaint and classic and makes any place instantly feel like a home.

Fit to be Squared Afghan Blanket Crochet Pattern

Large crochet afghan square with square and diamond patterns in pink, purple, green, and white in front of a white sofa.

Okay, now that we have covered diagonal lines, herringbone design and even gingham, it is time to show you what corner to corner really can do! This incredibly colorful and graphic Afghan beautifully demonstrates the amazing possibilities that corner to corner offers.

The layout of the shapes and colors is so satisfying and eye-catching and would look great spread across a bed or draped over a couch. The best part is that corner to corner crochet pieces are all completely reversible, so this blanket will look the same whichever way you hold it and there is no warped underside.

This means you can throw it casually over a chair and it will always look great whichever way the fabric falls. What’s more, this pattern is really well written and easy to follow, and will make creating this Afghan a joy.

Superhero C2C Blanket Crochet Pattern

Multi-colored crochet blanket with Marvel and DC superhero logos stitched in squares on a cream background.

And finally, for a bit of fun! We couldn’t resist putting this brilliant superhero corner to corner pattern on our list because it demonstrates just how detailed and creative your work can be, and it will make you feel like a crocheting superhero once you complete it!

It will also make a great present for any little boy or girl and will be all the more special because it is handcrafted. The colors are so vibrant and the superhero symbols in each patch are very clear and instantly recognizable!

What a fun project to take on. We think this crochet pattern is POW! WHAM! BOOM!
