I was really bored with the available watch straps out there. So I created this beginner mosaic watch band free crochet pattern to make my own fun band in my favorite colors.

Beginner Mosaic Watch Band Free Crochet Pattern
I love my watch, it’s become like a little security blanket for me. If I lose my phone, that’s ok, I can still make a call, set a reminder, note an upcoming appointment…I can even have my phone found using my watch.
But wearing a plain band is just boring. Boring and sad. So, get ready, because I have 900 ideas for fixing that – this is just the first.
If you’re ready, just grab your hook and let’s get going!
What Yarn Should You Use for a Watch Band?
For this watch strap, I wanted to use a yarn that would hold up really well to being worn daily and look sharp. Additionally, I wanted to play with color, so I found a fun 100% cotton yarn that was a very small weight (the smallest I’ve worked with) so the stitches would pop.
Regarding yarn sizing, this project can be worked with any fingering weight yarn or similar.
What Size Is This Watch Band?
As written, this pattern is one-size. The resulting bowl is 5-inches long and 1.5-inches wide. If you wanted to make a wider band, you can add rows of single crochet, just take care to add rows equally on each side. To make a longer or shorter band, you can add length or remove length by lengthening or shortening the loops on each end of the watchband.
How Much Yarn Will I Need to Make a Watch Band?
I used a very small amount of a two skeins of 100% cotton fingering/sock weight (size 1) yarn Hobbii Rainbow Cotton 8/4 in Teal #85 and White #1 colorways for the pictured watch band. Even were the entire watch strap made from one colorway, a full skein would not be required.
I do generally crochet in a medium-tension, so this is what I would consider an average amount of yarn usage for this project.
How Do You Crochet a Watch Band?
This easy watch band is worked in mosaic style, working from one side to the other. Working in mosaic style crochet is super simple and results with a fun, intricate pattern with very little effort.
How Do You Do Mosaic Crochet?
Mosaic crochet is done by working primarily in 3 stitches: single crochet, double crochet, and chain. Each row is tied off at the end of the row, leaving you with lots of tails, which can be captured and woven in with a couple of single crochet rows at the end.
It’s a clever and fun way to crochet, making some
There are two types of mosaic crochet, interlocking and overlay.
- Interlocking mosaic crochet is worked in meshes that, together, make an intricate design. So, you make “gaps” in your crochet and build your design with the second color within those gaps.
- Overlay mosaic is worked from right to left on the front side only. Each row alternates between two colors, with double crochet stitches covering the stitch below, revealing your design.
For this particular project, to simplify the concept, keep the watch band as flat as possible and introduce the concept of mosaic crochet, the stitch work is very basic. Each stitch is worked with a traditional single crochet and where we’re going to come down with a double crochet, I have us working a chain stitch. This eliminates the need for working in front and back loops. Just simplified.
If you’d rather work the pattern from the chart, here’s what I prepared. Again, this is a basic pattern for beginners – we’ll work on a more intricate pattern soon, I promise.
