Winter is here and it’s time to say goodbye to the warm summer days. Winter can be a difficult time, especially when you’re outside in the cold. There are few things that make winter more bearable than drinking coffee or tea from your favorite mug with a crocheted cozy around it!
Winter can be brutal sometimes, but there’s no need to let the cold stop you from enjoying your favorite coffee mug. With this easy crochet pattern for a cozy, you’ll never have to worry about your mug getting cold again!
What Yarn Should You Use for a Crochet Mug Cozy?
For this particular project, I wanted to use my husband’s favorite colors, but in a soft yarn that would make for a comfy grip around the mug. So, I chose to use Caron Simply Soft in grey, white, and ocean (blue).
Most mug wraps are made best with a worsted weight yarn or similar. They can be made with any yarn you prefer, but a nice thick yarn looks best and will hold shape for this type of use best. Below are some options that work well for making mug wraps.
What Mug Does This Mug Wrap Fit?
As written, this pattern is sized to fit a mug of 3-in diameter (7-8 cm). This is the typical size of a standard mug, but if you have mugs that are much bigger, despite the stretch of the finished project, you may want to add a row or two and test-fit your mug wrap. This pattern is extremely versatile, so you do have the opportunity to size your mug wrap to your mugs.
How Much Yarn Will I Need to Make a Mug Warmer?
I used about 1/3 of a 6 oz skein of 100% acrylic worsted weight yarn (size 4) in three different colors (so about 2 oz of yarn, but from three different skeins). I do generally crochet in a medium-tension, so this is what I would consider an average amount of yarn usage for this project.
