The Gathered Buds Scarf is one of my all-time favorite crochet keyhole scarf designs. Cozy winter scarf must have’s, for me, include ample crochet fabric and snuggly yarn for warmth, a design element that is pretty to look at and full of texture, and ease of wear. This scarf has everything on my checklist covered.
Ease of wear for a scarf can come in many forms and I found this to be a necessity managing babies and toddlers and all of their fun stuff on cold winter days. Who wants to backtrack for a lost scarf when there are so many fun things to explore in the snow! One solution is a scarf long enough to “tie” so it doesn’t fall off all the time. Another wonderful solution is to seam both ends to create an infinity scarf.
My solution for the Gathered Buds Scarf was to create a “keyhole” of sorts. Most keyhole scarves have a hole built into the actual scarf material to slip the end of the scarf into to hold in place. I love that design, but I wanted more of a match to go with my Gathered Buds Headband. So, I basically recreated the headband and then extended the scarf fabric from there. I finish the piece by going back to the “buds” section and seam it to make the keyhole loop.
This pattern is written for two lengths. I find the longer length works great for multiple wraps around my neck on those super cold winter days. You know, the ones that require outerwear accessories to let us really snuggle in and hide from the incredible wind that will take our breath away. You might guess I’m writing this post as we are going through an extreme cold snap!

Hi! I love this scarf but I think the instructions for the first two rows are off? The special now says to half double crochet in the back loop, but the round one and tap instructions say slip stitch, so can you clarify? Thank you!
