This list of crochet afghan patterns contains some of my own creations as well as favorites from other amazing creators. I grew up with my great grandmother making afghans on a regular basis. In fact, I still have a few in my linen closet today. There is truly nothing as warm and comforting on a cold day than an afghan.

Crochet Afghan Blanket Patterns
As I gathered afghan and blanket patterns, I looked for options that were not just functional, but beautiful. Crocheting is a true art form, so why not showcase your skill in patterns on useful blankets? I love the basic thick crocheted afghan I can add to my office chair for chilly mornings just as much as the intricate details of a baby afghan for the nursery. I hope you find as much joy in these patterns as I have.
How Many Skeins of Yarn do You Need for an Afghan?
Most average afghans will require between 10-15 skeins of yarn to create. Some patterns that are smaller for use as a lap blanket or throw, will use only 6-7 skeins.
This also depends upon the actual pattern of the afghan. For instance, a loosely crocheted pattern with larger weight yarn may require fewer skeins than one of the tighter patterns with thinner yarns. Rather than guessing at the number of skeins needed, pick a pattern you love, and purchase the suggested amount within the pattern.
How Much Time Does it Take to Crochet an Afghan?
How much time do you have to dedicate to crocheting?
There really is no set amount of time for making a blanket or afghan. As a beginner, it can take you 2-3 times the amount of time working as it might someone who is an expert. Another factor at play comes with how difficult the individual pattern is to create. A simple stitch will go much faster than a pattern with flowers like some of the ones below.
You may even need to factor in the time it takes for a thin yarn versus a thicker yarn. The small chevron pattern below will take much longer than a typical granny stripe afghan.
