This list of crochet afghan patterns contains some of my own creations as well as favorites from other amazing creators. I grew up with my great grandmother making afghans on a regular basis.  In fact, I still have a few in my linen closet today.  There is truly nothing as warm and comforting on a cold day than an afghan.

Crochet Afghan Blanket Patterns

As I gathered afghan and blanket patterns, I looked for options that were not just functional, but beautiful.  Crocheting is a true art form, so why not showcase your skill in patterns on useful blankets? I love the basic thick crocheted afghan I can add to my office chair for chilly mornings just as much as the intricate details of a baby afghan for the nursery.  I hope you find as much joy in these patterns as I have.

How Many Skeins of Yarn do You Need for an Afghan?

Most average afghans will require between 10-15 skeins of yarn to create.  Some patterns that are smaller for use as a lap blanket or throw, will use only 6-7 skeins.

This also depends upon the actual pattern of the afghan.  For instance, a loosely crocheted pattern with larger weight yarn may require fewer skeins than one of the tighter patterns with thinner yarns.  Rather than guessing at the number of skeins needed, pick a pattern you love, and purchase the suggested amount within the pattern.

How Much Time Does it Take to Crochet an Afghan?

How much time do you have to dedicate to crocheting?

There really is no set amount of time for making a blanket or afghan.  As a beginner, it can take you 2-3 times the amount of time working as it might someone who is an expert.  Another factor at play comes with how difficult the individual pattern is to create.  A simple stitch will go much faster than a pattern with flowers like some of the ones below.

You may even need to factor in the time it takes for a thin yarn versus a thicker yarn.  The small chevron pattern below will take much longer than a typical granny stripe afghan.

Flower Accent Crochet Afghan Pattern

This accented blanket has multiple options for making unique.  It is an intermediate skillset required, but it can be an excellent first option for a beginner who is looking to grow and improve their skills.

Rippled Fast Crochet Blanket Pattern

Rippled blue blanket

When I think of a crocheted blanket, this is the pattern that comes to mind.  Simple, rippled, and beautiful.  It is a simple cable pattern, but only smaller.  It really is beautiful when displayed and the tighter weave makes it warm in the winter.

Bulky Crochet Afghan Pattern

Bulky white cabled crochet pattern

I love a nice bulky pattern on a blanket and this one just fits that description beautifully.  It is both heavy enough to keep me warm in the colder months, while also being light enough to use as a throw on warm summer days.

Wundren Baby Blanket Pattern

Simple color striped crochet blanket

This beautiful patterned crochet blanket is a striped option that I love creating.  I used subtle tones of blue and orange that really makes this feel homey.  You can use any color combination and have equally beautiful results.

Crochet Owl Blanket Pattern

Crochet owl blanket

If you love owls, this is definitely going to be a favorite blanket pattern.  An intricately detailed pattern, there are tons of ways to showcase colors in this blanket.  I find it ideal for a baby nursery with the bright primary colors, but could be made with pastel or earth tones and become a great throw for any room.

This is a finely stitched chevron-patterned blanket.  I find this multi-colored pattern is a beautiful choice for a longer project.  With a thinner yarn used, it takes longer to complete, but the result is stunning.

Fields and Flowers Afghan Pattern

Green and brown striped blanket on chair

This brightly colored striped afghan is a great addition to any project basket.  I love the beautiful stripes and colors used, but also the variety of stitches that give each stripe a different feel.  The result is a beautiful patterned blanket that can be used as a throw, displayed on a wall, or even made large enough to use as a bed covering.

Easy Granny Stripe Crochet Afghan

Bright colored crochet granny striped blanket

When I think of an afghan, I always remember this style that my great grandmother made when I was a child.  Often, hers had rather ugly color patterns as she would use any scrap yarn she had on hand.  However, the love behind them was always the same.  Simple, beautiful, and functional.
