The Trail of Tears crochet pattern has a rich and dark history that has been lost to many over the years and it is almost entirely unknown to cultures away from North America.
The stunning design may have lost it’s meaning to some groups of people due to the large number of names it goes by.
Some call it the “Trail of Tears”, many name it the “Apache Tears”, and others completely nullify the history by calling it a “Mosaic Crochet”.

History of The Trail Of Tears
Taking a step away from the crochet pattern for a second, we feel it’s important to remind everyone who created this pattern and why the name “Trail of Tears” should be remembered.
The Trail of Tears is the route in which approximately 100,000 Indigenous Americans were forced away from their homes to a new location called Indian Territory, which was just west of the Mississippi River.
This happened in the 1830s. Around 15,000 people died on their 5,045 mile (8,120 km) journey, most of which were children and the elderly.
The troops making these innocent people relocate were allowed to travel on horseback but forced natives to walk. Although we now know this path to be “The Trail Of Tears” in 1830 is was known as the “Indian Removal Act”.
Most of these forced removals were put in place to allow the US Government to get hold of and set up gold mines. 
The History of the Trail of Tears Pattern
If it said that the indigenous communities created the Trail of Tears patterns as they travelled away from their homes.
Unfortunately there is no clear line of history about how this pattern emerged, but many people sell their Apache Tear wears without knowledge of its darker history or the deaths along the way.
