Puff Stitch Bracelet – Excellent Beginner Crochet Project Idea
When you’re a beginner crocheter, you find all these big, fun patterns but then, once you’ve printed them off and you’re staring at the stitches…it starts to feel quite daunting. Or you’ve even made it so far as to get to the craft store and you’re looking at all the beautiful skeins of yarn and all the price tags…a large project can seem unattainable. If you’re anything like me, all of that mountain of unknown is enough to keep you from picking up a hook.
That’s where a fun (and small) project can give you a small accomplishment to get you started. So, of course a fun little bracelet is where it’s at!
What Yarn Should You Use for a Crochet Bracelet?
For this particular project, I wanted something soft and a little stretchy to allow the bracelet to slip over my thumb, but then retain its shape so it doesn’t slide off when I don’t want it to. So, I selected Lion Brand Landscapes yarn in the Metropolis colorway.
But this project can be worked with any worsted weight yarn or similar. Bracelets can be made with any yarn you prefer, but a nice thick yarn looks best and will hold shape for this type of use. Below are some options that work well for making bracelets.
What Size Wrist Does This Bracelet Crochet Pattern Fit?
As written, this pattern is sized to fit a wrist of 7 to 7 1/2-in diameter (17-19 cm). This is the typical size of a standard wrist, but if you have a wrist that is much bigger, despite the stretch of the finished project, you may want to add chains in multiples of two and test-fit your crocheted bracelet. This pattern is extremely versatile, so you do have the opportunity to size your bracelet to your wrist.
How Much Yarn Will I Need to Make a Crochet Bracelet?
I used about 1/10 of a 3.5 oz skein of 100% acrylic worsted weight yarn (size 4) in a slightly variegated colorway. I do generally crochet in a medium-tension, so this is what I would consider an average amount of yarn usage for this project.
How Do You Crochet a Simple Bracelet?
Personally, I wanted to make a crochet bracelet pattern that was only a very few rows with a dramatic size. So that meant using a stitch that creates a lot of body and a yarn that would bring the stitch together in a way that was clean looking. For this bracelet, keeping the stitches large and bulky meant that I got more for the time. There are only 16 puff stitches in this, but I ended up with a bracelet that looks so much more than other bracelets using a smaller stitch or a smaller gage yarn.
How Do You Crochet a Thick Bracelet?
This particular pattern creates a bracelet that’s similar to a thick bangle bracelet. So, if you wanted to make a thicker version, you could simply add two more of the puff stitch rows before capping off the bracelet with the finishing row of single crochets. One thing to remember, though, if you are looking for a much thicker bracelet while using the variegated yarn as show, there will be more colorshift than what is shown in the photos.
How Do You Crochet a Thin Bracelet?
If you’re seeking a thin bracelet crochet pattern, this tutorial can still work for you. If you wanted to remove one of the puff stitch rows and skip to the single crochet row capping off the bracelet, you can end up with a bracelet of about 3/4-inches. Which is a little smaller than a watch band. Although this is not string-thin, this is a good size for most applications, particularly if you’re just looking for a small pop of color.
