The secret to the great detail in the body of the design is working in front and back loops only of half double crochet stitches. And then building upon that detail as you work to create vertical rows – almost like crochet ribbing.

Simple Crochet Baby Blanket

Size:

  • 39 x 31 in (99 x 79 cm)

  • Pattern is worked in multiples of 8 + 20 and 2 rows.

Materials:

  • Approximately 975 yards heavy worsted or aran weight yarn. Drops Nepal used for blanket in photo, but any comparable weight yarn can be used.

  • Crochet hook: Size J/10 (6 mm) or size needed to obtain gauge

  • Tapestry needle

Gauge: In alternating pattern of 4 front loop half double crochet followed by 4 back loop double crochet, 13 stitches and 10 rows = 4 inches

Skill Level: Easy

Special Stitches

Half Double Crochet in Bottom Loop of Foundation Chain:

Turn your foundation chain over and crochet in the row of single “bumps” or loops created on the bottom when you made the chain.

(Altered) Bean Stitch / Puff Stitch:

Insert hook in stitch, yarn over and pull through, *yarn over, insert hook in same stitch, yarn over and pull through, repeat from * 2 more times, yarn over, pull through 8 loops on hook, chain 1 (to lock stitch). Skip 1 stitch immediately following bean stitch. This will equal two stitches in pattern.

Directions for a Simple Textured Crochet Blanket Pattern

Chain 92, turn.

Row 1:

Turn foundation chain over and half double crochet in bottom loop of third stitch (from hook) of foundation chain (see Special Stitches Section for instructions), continue half double crochet in each stitch of foundation chain, turn. (90 stitches total)

Row 2:

Chain 2, half double crochet in first stitch, (Altered) Bean Stitch in next stitch (see Special Stitches Section for instructions), altered bean stitch across row (final bean stitch will be in third stitch from end), half double crochet in final stitch, turn. (44 bean stitches total)

Rows 3 and 4:

Repeat Row 2, 2 more times.

Row 5:

Chain 2, half double crochet in first stitch, bean stitch in next stitch, 2 more bean stitches, half double crochet in eighth stitch of row, continue with standard half double crochet in each stitch until you reach seventh stitch from end of row, bean stitch in seventh stitch from end, 2 more bean stitches, half double crochet in last stitch of row, turn.

Row 6:

*Chain 2, half double crochet in first stitch, bean stitch in next stitch, 2 more bean stitches, half double crochet in front loop only of next 4 stitches, half double crochet in back loop only of next 4 stitches, repeat 4 stitch sections of front loop or back loop only half double crochet across row until you reach seventh stitch from end of row (end 4 stitch repeat on front loop only set) bean stitch in seventh stitch from end, 2 more bean stitches, half double crochet in last stitch of row, turn.

Row 7:

Chain 2, half double crochet in first stitch, bean stitch in next stitch, 2 more bean stitches, half double crochet in back loop only of next 4 stitches, half double crochet in front loop only of next 4 stitches, repeat 4 stitch sections of back loop or front loop only half double crochet sets across row until you reach seventh stitch from end of row (end 4 stitch repeat on back loop only set) bean stitch in seventh stitch from end, 2 more bean stitches, half double crochet in last stitch of row, turn.

Rows 8 through 80:

Repeat from * for indicated number of rows.

Row 81:

Chain 2, half double crochet in first stitch, bean stitch in next stitch, 2 more bean stitches, half double crochet in eighth stitch of row, continue with standard half double crochet in each stitch until you reach seventh stitch from end of row, bean stitch in seventh stitch from end, 2 more bean stitches, half double crochet in last stitch of row, turn.

Row 82:

Chain 2, half double crochet in first stitch, bean stitch in next stitch, bean stitch across row (final bean stitch will be in third stitch from end), half double crochet in final stitch, turn. (44 bean stitches total)

Rows 83 and 84:

Repeat Row 82, 2 more times.

Row 85:

Chain 2, standard half double crochet in each stitch of row.

Fasten off.

Finishing:

Weave in loose ends.

Only light blocking to shape if necessary.
